Self-Adhesive Flooring: Substrate and Primer Buyer Checklist

Prepare a self-adhesive flooring enquiry with the exact substrate, compatible primer documents and clear responsibilities before ordering.

Does self-adhesive flooring need a primer?

Check the instructions for the exact flooring, substrate and primer combination. A self-adhesive backing does not answer every preparation question. HENRY's self-stick tile primer page describes a named primer for dry, dusty and porous substrates. Gerflor's Primer Performance page connects its primer to its own self-adhesive products. These are manufacturer-specific examples, not compatibility approvals for SZ STRONG BUILD flooring.

For a buyer comparing floor-plank quotations, the practical goal is a complete preparation brief. Identify the proposed product and the actual base, then request written instructions that cover both. This guide offers a purchasing workflow rather than an installation specification.

    1. Identify what is beneath the new floor

Record the exposed substrate and any existing floor layers. Ask the project team which materials will remain, which will be removed and which areas require further assessment. A room photograph helps explain the layout, but it cannot establish moisture condition or preparation suitability.

Ask who will inspect the base and provide the relevant findings. Keep uncertain material descriptions clearly marked. If one room includes different base materials, give each area a separate reference instead of treating the entire project as one substrate.

Before supplier comparison, make a short information sheet:

    • Project location, intended room use and expected installation method.
    • Exact flooring reference and proposed substrate or retained floor layer.
    • Site-assessment information already available and items still missing.
    • Proposed preparation materials, including any primer or levelling compound.
    • Person responsible for confirming the complete installation system.

    2. Request a compatible preparation system

Ask the flooring supplier for the current installation guide and a written response covering the proposed base. If a primer is required, record the exact primer reference and request its instructions as well. If the supplier says no primer is required, ask where that instruction applies and whether any preparation conditions remain.

Do not substitute a product because its label merely says primer. Ask both suppliers to resolve unclear compatibility before an order is released. Keep product-specific drying, application and environmental requirements in the approved instruction set rather than inventing a universal waiting time.

For procurement review, attach each answer to its source and date. A brochure, primer data sheet and installation guide may have different purposes. Ask for clarification when the proposed combination is not explicitly addressed.

      3. Prepare the flooring enquiry

Send the same base description and product reference to every supplier. Request a document list, unresolved conditions and the party responsible for confirming site suitability. This makes the replies comparable without asking a buyer to act as the installer.

If the supplier recommends a trial area, ask for its written procedure, assessment criteria and responsible reviewer. Record what was actually reviewed. A visual sample or an attractive room image is not evidence that the complete floor system has passed an adhesion or moisture assessment.

        Questions buyers often ask

Can a generic primer be used? Obtain written confirmation for the exact combination; a general product name is insufficient.

Does self-adhesive mean no preparation? Use the selected product's installation instructions to answer that question for the actual base.

What if the substrate is unknown? Request an assessment and keep technical acceptance pending rather than guessing.

Next step for your purchasing brief

Keep one approved document set with the order, including any revisions to the flooring or preparation materials. Review SZ STRONG BUILD flooring options and share the product reference, base description and missing information through the contact page. Ask for applicable product documents before making an installation decision.
